Dressing Up Your Basics: T-Shirt Edition

Dec 17

As you know, I normally don’t do outfit posts. However, I was inspired to show you how I dress on a daily basis after I started reading  ”How To Look Expensive”. Because I’m on a budget, I like to get good mileage out of my clothing. I’ve also learned to invest in quality basics because they will get you everywhere. Since the holidays are approaching, I thought it would be fun to show you how I use my basics for special occasions. Whether you have company parties or family dinners, there is no need to go out and buy a new ensemble (something I have regrettably done in the past). Without further adieu, I present to you my dressing up your basics series!

My basic tee is courtesy of Baukjen, the essential long sleeve t in fuchsia. I really like this style because it’s more of a jersey-like feel. It’s also longer, like a tunic, so it can be worn fitted or draped.

My first look is edgy glam. I like playing with textures, so the mix of leather, suede (necklace), and croc (embossed tights) adds a nice dimension to a basic shirt that could seem uninteresting paired with knits or denim.

My second look is cozy classic. Some prints just have an elegance to them, like houndstooth. Pairing it with a t and a thick-knit sweater elevates the look to something polished, but not overdone.

My third look is opulent artiste. It’s all about being-over-the-top. Instead of picking one statement piece, go for three. The key to pulling off a look like this is confidence, neutral colors, and the right occassion.

What are your favorite ways to dress up your basic tees?

What a fun post! I love all of your ideas. I tend to use my basics to dress up skirts or more elegant pieces to keep it somewhere between dressy and casual.

Yeah, that’s a good way to go. Sometimes I get too overdressed for things….if you couldn’t tell!
