My First Fashion Splurge

Last week, I read about Refinery29 staffs’ first fashion splurges and it got me thinking. Back in the day, my fashion choices were quite different, but not too skewed at the end of the day.  I wanted to join in on the fun and I thought it would be interesting to hear about your first fashion splurges too!

I was 18 and it was my first summer out of college. I was attending a private school and boy, was it a stereotypical one. It was the first time I had seen designer apparel and accessories in person.  It seemed that all the girls had the Louis pouchette or the Dior saddlebag.  And of course, they all had Chanel sunglasses and pearls. I felt so out of place.

During that summer, I worked at Express and Aldo a staggering amount of hours. I was living with my parents, so my only real expense was gas and the occasional meal out.  My weekly haunt was Filene’s Basement, which was huge and bursting with designer duds.

And then I found my baby, the Prada tessuto pouch. It was $125 but I had never been more proud. My parents weren’t exactly thrilled, even though I’m pretty sure I fibbed about the price. I used the bag heavily through college, but a little bit too much so. I ended up ripping the strap and after that, I don’t exactly remember what happened to it. I think it’s very telling that my first big purchase was a Prada bag, which opened the door to a few more and hopefully many more to come!

What was your first fashion splurge?

Sadly I didn’t have my first real splurge until my honeymoon. But boy is that Valentino bag worth it! And as a keepsake of that amazing trip, I’d say it’s worth it times two!

A splurge is a splurge! And yes, I totally think you made the right decision. Everyone always needs a great red bag!

I think my engagement ring was a big splurge. I get bored with my bags, so I never spend too much on them. If I had a million dollars, I’d buy a bag from Smythson. When I was in high school, all the rich girls had real Dooney & Bourke bags, and everyone else got fake ones from the flea market. I could tell the difference, and I didn’t like any of them. :P

I’m with you! I’ve never been a fan of Dooney either!

Mine was a pair of black 20-eye Dr. Martens. I put them on layaway in high school and paid about $180 for them (which is ABSURD in high school money!). Boy did I love them though.

Wow! That is quite a splurge for high school! I remember I wanted a coach bag in high school so bad! I’m so thankful that I never did get one after all!

I still fudge prices when my parents ask! lol My first splurge was…. hmmmm I don’t even remember!! It was probably a Coach bag of some sort. I was gifted a few of those when I was 13-16. When I got to college I bought my first Marc Jacobs bag and that was a big deal for me! Especially when it fell apart and the company replaced it with a bigger and more expensive bag!

Oh wow! That’s some pretty awesome customer service! That’s definitely a perk of buying a good bag. I know Prada, Chanel, and Gucci will always repair and clean your bags too!
